LANEWAY HOUSING (Lane)
Vancouver, British Columbia
"LANEWAYS are a city's hidden treasues."
~ Rob Sieniuc
A laneway house is a small, compact detached home located in the typical area of a standard single-family lot allocated for a garage. It faces the lane or sidestreet (corner properties) and maintains the lot's backyard open space. Homes in laneways add invisible density to a city neighbourhood with minimum impact on existing infrastructure.
Only a portion of the area allocated for the main residence's garage is utilized. A one car garage is still required to be incorporated within the laneway structure. Limited to rental or family use only, with no permitted strata-titling, laneway housing respond to the need for providing diverse kinds of rental accommodation. In Vancouver, laneway homes have become a viable alternative to address affordable housing.
